Finney Secure Smartphone
RESEARCH | WIREFRAMES | TESTING
Our vision is to bridge the gap between the blockchain economy and the mass market through multi-layered cybersecurity and a much-improved user experience.
The Finney has an operating system secure enough for storing and using cryptocurrency in a mobile environment.
Finney's uniqueness
Finney™'s embedded cold-storage wallet allows you to safely carry your tokens and make transactions on-the-go. Other unique applications of the Finney: dCENTER, AppLocker and Cyber Security Center.

Get to know your enemies
Consumers have the option to use a free application on their mobile (Android or iPhone) phone and get the most of what the Crypto world has to offer but with a low-security level since they are in constant threat of hackers. On the other hand, they can choose to use a Cold Storage device which has the highest security level available with a big lack of usability. Here are some of the most popular:
The challenge
The Finney is the first Blockchain enabled smartphone with a Cold Storage Wallet in the world. The objective with the Finney phone is to balance safety and simplicity. Therefore, it must meet the following needs:
Ultra-secure hardware wallet solution (KeepKey, Trezor, Ledger)
Android user experience
Unique implementation of the Hardware Wallet (Safe Screen)
Challenging Safe Screen positioning (above the Notch, under the Chin, secure UI)
Safe Screen - low-density touch screen
A product that does not exist and has nothing to rely on: no users no actual competitors
Keep users satisfied as the Blockchain world is not immediate. Certain actions and their approval may take a considerable amount of time

Surveys
Part of the research and surveys were done within Sirin Labs Telegram group, containing 62,000 users. This group mostly includes Crypto users and enthusiasts who were waiting for better solutions and usage of the Blockchain in general and specific for Cryptocurrency. The purpose was to find which Hardware Wallet or online service they use, what is the frequency of use, main uses and the purpose of it.
Who is it for
By gathering data and talking to users and potential buyers of the Finney smartphone, who had first-hand experience with the Cold Storage Wallet, we were able to come up with three personas that represent the variety of worldwide behaviours. These are the highlights for each persona:
expert
Born and raised: Japan
20-35 years old
Crypto experience: 5 years
crypto usage: payment in local businesses, storage of cryptoceurrencyes, transfer of currencies between traders
frequency of use: 2-3 times a week
advanced
Born and raised: Europe
40-50 years old
Crypto experience: 3 years
crypto usage: transfer of currencies between traders
frequency of use: a few times a week
newbie
Born and raised: worldwide
20-35 years old
Crypto experience: 0 years
crypto usage: irrelevant
frequency of use: irrelevant
From the process
Usability tests
Due to technical challenges, it took a while to get a decent working SEND flow (for both screens) in order to run the tests. Once it was done, I conducted several interviews to identify the pain points of the process. I interviewed 6 people between the ages of
24-43. Part of them were advanced users in the Crypto world others complete newbies with a lot of interest in our product. One of the interesting things I observed was the way users held our phone as a first time user vs. 3rd and 5th. time use.
Main findings
During the tests, I realised that different people have a different approach to new applications and devices in particular: the phone structure produces a learning curve that can not be ignored. The more enthusiastic the person is, the less time he needs to get comfortable using the phone.
QR scan has not shown - users thought scan has failed
NEXT button is hidden at the bottom of the screen and the keypad is hiding it which makes MAX the only pressable button in order to get to the next screen
All participants managed to finish the basic process (send flow) without external help
Suggested solutions
Showing the scanned QR code after a successful scan and a different one in case of invalid one or any other visual change
The keypad NEXT button will show an APPROVAL button instead
To make sure that we do not lose users who know less about the blockchain world, a solution of in-app explanations has been issued in designated places
Finney Wallet - full send flow
TBD - backlog
in-app explanations
introduction of new features
onboarding
simplification of Setup process
internal comparison mechanism without the need for user intervention
better solution for Default Blockchain method in the Wallet and in the dCENTER
consolidation of the process of currency conversion, buying of currencies on credit and receiving back
